Me, Myself and I
A logo inspired by and made for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed allowing my personality to run free in this design.
Without a predetermined approach, I starting the process with a series of freeform sketches. I ended
up using my initials as the basic building block for my logo.
Concepts Inspired By...
Some inspirational references like the ancient Greek spartan shield and Bruno Munari's works, were examples of the positive impact of having properly proportioned elements within the design. Others were referenced because they had a specific trait that I liked, for example the Halo Reach "O" for its shape and the FedEx logo for the "hidden arrow."
Ratios & Colours
The size and placement of the logo elements are ratio-based; using a
grid, unitless dimensions were assigned based on the proportionality of elements to each other (specifically the gaps between elements).
I'm a fan of rich reds and wanted to use one of them as the prime colour for my logo and brand. I chose secondary colours & shades that complement the primary colour. Depending on the paper, the red I chose does print a bit darker than what's shown on screen, but I definitely prefer a slightly darker tone than one that's lighter or appears washed out.

Typeface Choices
The two font families I chose for my brand are Varela Round Regular (main) and Lato (supporting). I wanted my main typeface to be a clean sans-serif font with soft edges. I also wanted to avoid fonts with implied associations, so I stayed away from typefaces like SF Pro and Fraktur.
Unfortunately, Varela Round only has one typeface, so I use Lato to fill the gaps. While it is a commonly used font, it's not the primary face of my brand and it fits nicely with the Varela Round's aesthetic.
I use Varela Round for title and subtitle blocks, though never in all upper case. Lato is used for supporting text or paragraphs, making full use of the typeface's range.

Design Breakdown
The core element of my design is the arrangement of my initials E, Q, and D in a way that proportionally makes sense. It also works for including a handful of anecdotal meanings.
The Design
While my logo could be interpreted as a somewhat ambiguous series of simple shapes, it works well as a stylized signature. It scales well, working in both colour and black & white, and dances the line between a statement and a muted design.
