Non-Industrial Infrared Heat
From research to user-testing to the final design, the Hïti project explores the idea of a fully customizable solution for targeted heating.
Hïti
A modular, customizable & targeted infra-red heating system for both personal and commercial use.
Modularity
Clean, non-visible connection points that would function similar to wireless chargers.
Adjustability
Unlike normal heaters, infra-red heat is highly targeted. The range of possible user scenarios requires the solution to have a degree of flexibility (i.e. not all surfaces where the device can be placed are the same height).
Trials-by-Users
2 rounds of testing to determine and confirm:
-
control dial shape, size & orientation
-
handle shape, size & placement
Touch Points
Heating Plates
Using basic Lego mock-ups, I tested the idea of having a movable internal heating plate, instead of having the whole system tilt.
-
Type 1: Max angle of ~20° (40° range) full power always
-
Type 2: Max angle of ~40° (80° range) half power when angled
-
Type 3: Max angle of ~45° half power when angled

The Initial Concept
Aesthetics needed work
I liked the front profile quite a bit, but the side profile was unappealing and the back profile felt bland. However, this concept confirmed the viability of the internal components, which allowed for a renewed focus on the exterior aesthetics.
The Final Concept
Model Making
The final 1:1 scale model is made from medium-density urethane foam, with a control dial crafted from FDM printed PLA plastic,
and painted using gesso & acrylics.
